For those who don't know, my lil' rock n' blues band ROLLIN' SIXERS are in the Global Battle of the Bands finals. How? Only the Gods of Rock know.
Well, them and the judges.
The finals will be held at PLANET HOLLYWOOD on NOVEMBER 13TH. Doors open at 9PM. We're the fourth band, so if all goes according to schedule we'll be ON STAGE at 10:51PM. There's an entrance fee, but I can't remember how much.
Unlike the heats, though, the marks are purely based on the judges scores, no fan votes. So why am I sending out these mass invites?
Because I like you. WE, the band, like you.
And we'd like to get drunk with you.
...and before you point it out, yes, the poster is a rip-off of the 'Shine A Light' poster. Did I say rip-off? I meant 'homage'.

Rocking to the beat
By THO XIN YI
WITH a desire of making it big on the international stage burning strong, 13 bands played their hearts out at the first qualifier for the Global Battle of the Bands (GBOB) Challenge Malaysia 2008.
The bands, whether signed or unsigned, professional or amateur, belted out songs from various genres, ranging from rock n’ roll, blues, ska punk, modern alternative folk, alternative acoustic rock, neo classical to metal and punk.
The enthusiastic crowd at Titanium Bar & Dance Club in Petaling Jaya nodded to the music, while some even hit the dance floor to show support for their favourite bands.
In the end of the battle, Lab Rat, the Rollin’ Sixers and Single Track Mind were chosen as the finalists.

Lab Rat keyboardist and vocalist Raja Shahirah Raja Bahrin was excited by the win.
“This is our first live performance after getting together a year-and-a-half ago. In fact, the five of us are playing with other bands, and Syarul Reza — one of the band members — wanted a different band to express the softer side of him.
“Our music is more fun and light. It was an encouraging sign to see that the audience appreciated our music during the qualifier,” she said.
Khairil Bahar, the guitarist of Rollin’ Sixers, said the band got their inspiration from the music of the 1960s and 1970s.
“A lot of people don’t play like that anymore. Most of them are into the modern sound.
“We have been together since 2005, playing mainly blues rock. Our idea is to have fun and play really good music. We like to play old sounds and give them a youthful feel,” he said.
Sponsored by Jack Daniel’s Global Tour, another three qualifying heats will take place in Johor Baru (Eskimo Joy on Aug 29), Penang (Carmen Club Bayview on Oct 11) and Kuala Lumpur (Thai Club on Oct 25).
Twelve qualifiers from these preliminaries will then compete in the national final on Nov 14 in Kuala Lumpur, and one band will walk away with RM50,000 and fly to London to compete with 37 other bands in a three-day music festival.
GBOB Malaysia national director Issa Rodriguez Medina said: “All competing bands must be able to perform their own songs live. There are no cover versions, no backing tapes, no TV makeovers. The GBOB Challenge is a celebration of raw talent over manufactured celebrity.”
God must have a sense of irony...

...to make it rain so heavily on the day of an event called 'Sunburst'. Heh.
Unlike other blog posts that no doubt will soon pop up on the subject of this humungous music festival (I don't think I've seen so many international bands on one bill at one venue in Malaysia before), I sadly won't be writing about it because I wasn't there. The venue is just down the road from my house and the cars are blocking my way to Hartamas something chronic, and my car is not one of them. I had plenty of chances to get tickets and one friend was even going to pass me one for free half an hour before the Roots were on, but I still didn't go.
Why? Well, that's the thing, isn't it.
I wanted to wait till Sunburst before blogging about this because, let's face it, after that incredibly high profile event there'll be no hiding it anymore. Some of you may have seen the posters outside Radioactive stores (the brand, not shops near Chernobyl). What posters? These posters:

This is the band known as WhyTooQuay' (I'm not spelling it to avoid googlisms). WhyTooQuay have been around for a while in the local underground scene. WhyTooQuay have played throughout Malaysia as well as Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. WhyTooQuay also played in England when they won the regional finals for the Global Battle of the Bands and made it to the super-finals in England.
I used to be in this band from it's inception till January 2008. And now I'm not.
Some may ask, "why in God's name would you leave a band after it's finally gotten so far?!" Those that know me know the reason why, those that don't know me but know others may know a 'different' reason why. Either way, they're playing at Sunburst, and it's one of the reasons why I'm not too hot about going.
That doesn't, however, mean that I hate the band. Far from it. I'm fucking glad they're playing at Sunburst because they deserve it, and I don't have a problem with any most of the people in the band, but there would be complications.
For those that know the way WhyTooQuay is set up, you'd probably ask the next question, and I'll answer it: no, I'm not in EffWhyEye either. Yup. Strange times we're living in, aren't we?
I have no regrets. I made the decision and I'm glad I did and I hope WhyTooQuay played an excellent set. But things happen, and people move on, and sometimes you have to be the motherfucker to take a shit in another motherfucker's cereal. C'est la vie.
Still, no regrets.
...
...ok, just one regret: it would be cool to see 'The Roots' live. But I was also working today, so there was no chance of that. Now if you cheap ass motherfuckers could move your cars out of the goddamn way I may be able to hit up Spicy's in Hartamas for some roti bakar telur cheese. Move, bitches!

I've always liked Ariff's photography, and I've always wanted Ariff to photograph Triple 6 Poser Rollin' Sixers in action, and the pics are now up on Facebook and I love 'em...
...and now I realize what everyone meant when I looked so serious on stage. I was having a blast, but somehow it doesn't look like it.

It has been decided. After long and careful deliberation, the five individuals pictured above who, until recently, were known collectively as 'Triple 6 Poser', have concluded that, as of this day, March 3rd 2008, they will no longer be known by said moniker and instead be replaced with a commonly agreed alternative nom de plume:
Rollin' Sixers
